Frownies began in 1889 as Wrinkle Eradicators. Invented by Margaret Kroesen for her daughter, Wrinkle Eradicators were designed to re-train the muscles of the face over time to significantly diminish the appearance of deep wrinkles and frown lines around the eyes, mouth and forehead. Although Margaret had no intention of marketing the amazing product, her husband's death forced her to enter the business world to support her family. She started working at B & P Company, which specialized in barber supplies. As the company's sales dwindled, Margaret offered to buy them out and gradually changed the product line to sell only her Wrinkle Eradicators and skin treatments.

For some time, Frownies remained a well-kept secret among Broadway and Hollywood stars and makeup artists. Olivia de Havilland had them sent to her at hotels all over the world; Gloria Swanson wore them in Sunset Boulevard; and the Kennedy women wrote letters to B & P Company ordering Frownies as well.

Although they have come a long way from the Wrinkle Eradicators they once were, the formula remains the same as the original which had proven so effective. More than a century since they were created, Frownies are still manufactured by B & P Company, which is now run by a fourth-generation member of the founding family.
